Zinger Music App
A music streaming app concept built from survey and interview research.
Note
Facts only for now. Full write-up to follow.
Brief
A music streaming app concept designed around what users say they dislike about existing services.
Research
- 6-question survey to 700+ students on Laurier’s MyLearningSpace list, 15 responses
- 5 in-depth interviews with 18–25 year olds
- Competitive analysis of Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music and SoundCloud
Survey results
- 80% used Spotify, 20% Apple Music
- 80% listened mainly on phone, 33% in the car, 18% on laptop
- Spotify’s AI playlist feature rated 3.4 out of 5
Personas
Usability testing
Two rounds with the same 5 participants: a paper prototype, then an interactive Figma build.
- Round 1 findings: recently-played music hidden behind an extra click; menu page oversized and cluttered
- Round 1 fixes: Recently Listened, Weekly Recommendations and Always on Repeat surfaced on the home screen; menu condensed into a hamburger dropdown
- Round 2 findings: no persistent play bar; no dedicated now-playing page
- Round 2 fixes: play bar fixed to the bottom of every screen and on the lock screen; now-playing page with lyrics, artist profile, queue and comments
My contribution
Competitive analysis, survey and interviews, personas and Figma work, both rounds of usability testing.
