Facts only for now. Full write-up to follow.

The Posture Check prototype on a desk: an ultrasonic sensor and LED wired across a breadboard to an Arduino, with the Arduino IDE open on a laptop behind it

Brief

Students develop poor posture during long study sessions. On-screen alerts get ignored during focused work.

How it works

  • Ultrasonic sensor measures distance between the user and their screen
  • LED light cue activates when poor posture persists
  • Audio alert adds a second sensory channel

Process

  • Research into student study habits and ergonomics
  • Sensor programming and integration
  • Arduino prototype build with LEDs and speaker
  • Testing with students during study sessions, adjusting sensitivity and timing

Findings

  • On-screen notifications were ignored during focused work
  • Early versions were too aggressive; participants said they would unplug it
  • False triggers on correct posture were the main calibration problem

My contribution

Research and concept, Arduino build and sensors, physical prototyping, user testing.
